Gapyeong Tour

Many people may know Nami Island in South Korea, famous with the beautiful tree lanes and shooting place of Winter Sonata drama, but not so many people know about Petite France, which is near Nami Island. Petite France is located in Gapyeong-gun (gun = county), the eastern part of Gyeonggi-do (do = province), and Nami Island is 3.8 km away from Gapyeong, in the border between Gyeonggi-do and Gangwon-do (but it belongs to Gangwon-do). If you come all the way from Seoul (or basically from anywhere) to Nami Island, it is worth it to also visit Petite France in the same day. I call it as Gapyeong Tour. Gapyeong is beautiful with natural views like mountains, rivers and lakes. There are many villas and resorts over there as it is one of the favorite relaxing and vacation destinations in Korea.

View Gapyeong Tour in google map

Petite France

The way to go to Petite France by public transportation from Seoul is to take subway/train to Cheongpyeong Station in Gyeongchun Line. For example, if I go to Cheongpyeong Station from Seoul National University Station (near my home), it would take about 100 minutes by subway with 2 transfers. So the distance depends on which part of Seoul you are going from.

Map from SMRT website

From Cheongpyeong Station, take exit 2 to the bus stop to catch Gapyeong City Tour Bus (I know the website link from Jim who commented this post, thanks Jim!). If you're lost, don't worry, there is a Tourism Center in exit 1, so you can ask them. This shuttle bus passes several stops including Petite France, Nami Island, and the nearest subway stations and bus terminals. You can hop on and off at every stop you want by using single ticket, which costs 5,000 KRW ($5) per person. Ticket can be purchased to the driver inside the bus. You need to keep the ticket and show it to the driver every time you hop on to the bus. It runs 5 times a day. Here is the timetable (click it to enlarge):

My route was on the red timetable: Cheongpyeong Station - Petite France - Nami Island - Gapyeong Station. If you want to travel the other way around, see the green timetable

Gapyeong City Tour Bus

During the bus journey from Cheongpyeong Station to Petite France, which took about 20 minutes, the TV inside the bus showed us Running Man episode #40 which was located in Petite France. It looked funny even though I didn't understand Korean, and it is indeed funny when I watched it after that at home with subtitle. Not only funny, it also shows us the beauty of Petite France. It's hard to split my attention between the funny show inside the bus and beautiful white lake along twisty road outside the bus.

So, what is exactly Petite France? Petite France is a theme park designed like a French village in the middle of Alps mountains. The buildings are in European style, narrow and high, with bright colors. It is located in the middle of nowhere on the hillside, and surrounded by mountains (in the winter covered by snow) so it really looks like a Mediterranean village in the Alps.

The entrance fee for this village is 8,000 KRW ($8) per person. It is built by a Korean who likes The Little Prince (French: Le Petit Prince') story so much. That's why we can see many drawings, and a museum about this famous story. When I stumbled around the museum, I accidentally found The Little Prince stamp. I directly put it on my notebook. Apparently there are total 8 stamps with different picture that you can find anywhere inside this village. I only found 3 stamps. If you have time, try to search and collect all of them, it will be fun.

In Petite France we can also try Mediterranean clothes and French foods. There is one restaurant but I don't recommend it. It has only 5 choices of food, which is expensive and not really good (of course foods in attraction places are usually over-priced). There are some buildings in the village that serve as accommodation for overnight guests and halls for events. Many youth trainings are camped in this place.

The unique thing about this place for korean drama fans: it is the shooting location of Beethoven Virus. If you watched the drama, you will be familiar with Kang Maestro's working room. In this room, everything is about music, from a guitar shaped desk, piano, music books and note sheets. There are also photos and signatures of the actors and actresses of the drama, including Jang Geun Suk.

Nami Island

Enough with Petite France, I moved to Nami Island using the next bus. Taxi ride between Petite France and Nami Island would cost about 20,000 KRW ($20). Yes, it is quite expensive and it is hard to find a taxi in Petite France, so Gapyeong City Tour Bus is really a good option. The view in 20 minutes bus journey to go there was really amazing! You can't take your eyes off beautiful frozen lake and snowy mountains in the winter. We can see many villas facing the lake and their private boat parking on the lake.

The other options to go to Nami Island directly from Seoul:
  1. Take subway until Gapyeong Station in Gyeongchun Line (2 stations away from Cheongpyeong Station). On the bus stop in front of station exit, there are many taxis waiting to bring you to Nami Island entrance gate. It is only 5 minutes drive, Taxi costs about 4,000 KRW ($4), while local bus costs 1,000 KRW ($1). Taking taxi is a great deal when you travel in 4 people group.
  2. Take shuttle bus from Nami Island Seoul Center in Insadong (besides Tapgol Park) directly to Nami Island entrance gate. It costs 23,000 KRW ($23) including 2 ways bus and admission tickets (8,000 KRW or $8 for foreigner). Bus from Seoul departs at 9.30 and bus going back to Seoul departs at 16.00.
I personally prefer the first way. It may be more complicated to transfer transportation for few times, but it is more adventurous, cheaper and more free to go whenever we like.

From entrance gate, a 5 minutes ferry ride takes us to the island. Ferry comes every 15 minutes. We can also fly there using Zip Rider (and come back with Ferry), which costs almost 40,000 KRW ($4) including admission fee.

Nami Island or Naminara Republic is named after General Nami who was a brave soldier and died at young age because of false accusation of being a traitor. His grave lies in the entrance of this island. In 2001, Nami Island was renovated as an art and culture amusement park. It was shooting location for several movies and a famous Winter Sonata drama in 2002. In 2006, it declared independence as the Naminara Republic.

Since Korean Wave (Hallyu) spread well-known in Asian countries, there are many Asian tourists come to this place, including Malaysians and Indonesians. When I came there on the first day of 2012, I found a new year greeting written in Bahasa Indonesia or Malay. It was really something.

The island is really great for relaxing and enjoying the nature. We can rent bike or take electric car tour or walk slowly on the forest path surrounded by pines or picnic. I have been there during Autumn and Winter seasons, this island in both seasons are beautiful!

Nami Island in Autumn

Nami Island in Winter

Going back to Seoul is easy. From entrance gate of Nami Island, walk through parking lot until the bus stop. Take Gapyeong City Tour Bus to Gapyeong Station, only 5 minutes ride. Take the train towards Sangbong and transfer to any subway stations in Seoul.

That is the end of Gapyeong Tour.

I was thinking of going to Nami island first thing in the day, have lunch at Nami, tour around before heading over to Petite France. You mentioned there was a City Tour Pass to Petite France, can I use it if I have purchased a Seoul City Pass/ M-pass?

I saw some post saying that the shuttle between Cheongpyeong & Pettit France is cancelled. So going to Pettit France has to take a nus from Cheongpyeong Terminal.
Is it referring to the Gapyeong City Tour Bus? Thanks...

    1. Hi Carla! Sorry for the late reply, I thought I already replied this T_T

Anyway, I think it's easier to go back to Seoul from Nami Island, rather than from Petite France. If you missed the tour bus, you can get taxi easily from Nami Island to the nearest train station (Gapyeong Station, only 5 minutes taxi ride). While in Petite France, it's hard to get a taxi, and it would take 20 minutes to go to the nearest train station (Cheongpyeong Station), more expensive.

    1. Hello Owen. I've never been to Garden of Morning Calm, so I don't know exactly how to go to Nami Island from there. In this article, they said to take a bus from Cheongpyeong Intercity Bus Terminal (10 minutes walking distance from Cheongpyeong Train Station) to Garden of Morning Calm. I think, once you finish there, you should go back to Cheongpyeong Train Station (using the same bus when you go to Garden of Morning Calm), then take Gapyeong Tour Bus to Nami Island :)

    2. Hi.. i just found this blog.
Garden of morning calm is very beautiful! I went to nami and morning calm last May.

Owen, if you want to visit morning calm in the morning, I think you couldn't take the tour bus. Because based on its schedule, the first arrival is at 10.30.

So, I aggree with Rika's suggestion. Use public bus from cheongpyeong station. It's not far from cheongpyeong terminal. you can walk there in 10 minutes. The bus costs 1100 won.

Then, from morning calm you can use the tour bus to go to nami (75minutes ride, based on the schedule)

  9. Hi,
You mentioned about taking the Gapyeong City Tour Bus from Gapyeong Station. May I know if it is from the Gapyeong Subway Station or the Gapyeong ITX Train Station? Are these 2 stations the same or somehow far apart? -- Geraldine.

    1. Hi Geraldine,
ITX train is different than the normal train, it is more expensive and faster because it's only stopped in four stations. The trains are different, but they both stop in the same Gapyeong Station. You can take Gapyeong City Tour Bus from there :)

So, if we want to Nami from Petite France is just by using the same bus from we take in Cheongpyeon Station? the Gapyeong Tour Bus? is it just 5.000 won for a day whatever direction, or is it whenever i hop in or out i should pay 5.000 won again?

I guess looking at the timetable from the bus, it should be done in a day, to explore Nami and Petite.. :D

Nice blog! I'm going next month.

The tour bus no 5 schedule says it arrives at Gapyeong Station at 6:20pm. I have checked from Korail website that the ITX train back to Seoul arrives at the station at 6:28pm.

Is there enough time? Or do you think I should catch the next train at 7:20pm. I am making early booking for the ITX tickets.

    Thank you :)

    1. Hi Shah, I think 8 minutes is enough to go from bus stop to the train, because the bus stop is located just in front of the station. Buses in Korea are usually disciplined in time, but I'm a little bit worried tho if the bus to Gapyeong Station arrives late. But taking 7.20 train would be really exhausting to wait :|

Could you just take normal train instead of ITX? You can't reserve seats but normal train is also convenient, and it comes every few minutes.

Do i just purchase the gapyeong city tour bus ticket? But where do i buy the gapyeong city tour bus ticket and where do i hop on the bus?

If you take Insadong Shuttle Bus, you have to be back in Nami Island at 4PM to catch the bus back to Insadong. I don't think there is enough time to go to Petite France. I suggest you go to Nami Island by train.

Gapyeong City Tour Bus ticket can be purchased inside the bus. When you get onto the bus, pay 5000 Won to the driver. If you want to go to Nami Island first and then Petite France, get the bus in front of Gapyeong Train Station. If you want to go to Petite France first and then Nami Island, get the bus in front of Cheongpyeong Train Station.

  21. Hi Rika! Thanks for the reply! I am still confused because I will be taking the "green route" not the red one and it says Garden at 18:30 not 17:00. Is that the last stop?

    1. Garden of Morning Calm is the last stop at 18.30. From Gapyeong Station to Garden of Morning Calm, check the green table. But if you want to go back to Gapyeong Station from Garden of Morning Calm, check the red table. And the red table says that the last bus from Garden of Morning Calm is 17.00 (5th bus). If you can't take the last bus, the alternative option is taking taxi. Once again, you can take the train back to Seoul from Cheongpyeong Station, no need to go back further to Gapyeong Station. Cheongpyeong Station is closer than Gapyeong Station, therefore the taxi fare would be cheaper too :)

      2. No need to make reservation to Nami Island. But if you want to take the shuttle bus from Seoul direct to Nami Island, then you need to make a reservation here.

    1. is this right?
    Depart (Hongik, Line2)
    Transfer (Wangsimmi, Line (5)
    Transfer (Gunja, line 7)
    Transfer (Sangbong)** to???
    Arrival Cheongpyeong???

    2. **where do we need to exit at sangbong station in order to transfer to the train that will lead us to cheongpyong? what does "Quick Transfer: 3Car 4Door" mean? it was written in the picture which contains customer information/ Last Train. is this the exit? i read in other blogs that the train going to cheongpyeong is a regular train and differs from the Seoul Subway?

    3. is there a customer service (English) at Sanbong Station?

sorry for being meticulous, we just wanted to plan ahead so that we can maximize our time. better if we ask, less mistake-- less hassle....

thanks again in advance for your help... :)

    1. Hi,

      1. From Hongik to Cheongpyeong:
Hongik (Line 2) -> Wangsimni (transfer to Jungang Line, not Line 5!) -> Sangbong (transfer to Gyeongchun Line) -> Cheongpyeong
I can send you a picture of this map, if you give me your email :)

      2. When you alight at Sangbong station, look for "Gyeongchun Line". Train or Subway in Korea usually consists of 8 Cars, and each car has 4 doors. On the platform or inside the train, you can see for example "3-4", that means you are standing in 3th Car 4th Door. "Quick Transfer 3Car 4Door" means it is the closest door that leads you into the transfer way. No need to worry about that, you can exit through any door of the train to transfer to other train. That "Quick Transfer" feature is for people in hurry to get to the next train :D
Train going to Cheongpyeong (Gyeongchung Line) indeed differs than Seoul Subway. Seoul Subway has number, for example Line 2, Line 5, and so on. But let's not worry about that either. Subways and regular trains in Korea are connecting perfectly, that you almost can't tell the differences. You can use the same T-Money card for all trains and subways.

      3. I think yes, there is customer service at Sangbong station, because it is a quite big station.

      Hope it explains well :)

This is a great blog as the guidance.
I am a bit confused about the red route and green route.
I am planning to go to "The garden of Morning Calm -> Petite French -> Nami Island" in a day.

I read some comments that went the same way as I did, but I am lost. Since the website of the Gapyeong Tour bus is in Korean only.

    My questions are:
    1. Does the Gapyeong Tour bus cover all those 3 areas?
    2. Which exit should I go from the Gapyeong station so I can take the Gapyeong Tour Bu?
    3. "The Garden of Morning Calm" website mentions that I have to get off at Cheongpyeong station and walk to the Cheongpyeong bus terminal?

    Please advise. Thank you.

    1. Hi Rika

After I read one more time. I understand that I shouldn't go as what I have planned before. I should have arrange the schedule as Petite French -> Nami Island -> and the last is the Garden of Morning Calm?

      Is that right?

    2. No, your first plan was correct. Go to Garden of Morning Calm -> Petite France -> Nami Island. Gapyeong Tour Bus covers all those places. To go to Garden of Morning Calm, you should get off at Cheongpyeong Station, not Gapyeong Station. There were only 2 exits in that station. There was a tourism center in one of the exits (I forget which one), you can ask them which bus stop has Gapyeong Tour Bus. I think you don't need to walk to Cheongpyeong Bus Terminal from Cheongpyeong Station. You can take Gapyeong Tour Bus directly in front of Cheongpyeong Station.

  27. Thanks so much for this entry. I will be going to those places next month. Can't wait to experience the Petite France as I missed that place the first time I went to South Korea last year. Thanks again Rika!

  29. hello, I'm Korean who lives in Gapyeong I'm surprised at many foreigner want to trip here. anyway, I don;t recommend that you have lunch in Nami, because Nami island's restaurants charge too much. there are many restaurants in a town which are charging reasonable price. Actually I just want you to leave a good memory about Korea. (Sorry for my poor English)

    1. Hi, thanks for your comment :) The foods in Nami Island are indeed considered expensive for the so-so foods like that. But you can't resist to buy the steaming corn in the cold romantic place like Nami Island xD

    1. Hi Lili, I'm in Jakarta now. With my newborn baby, I can't do much traveling these days hehe. You may ask any questions regarding Seoul :)

I never stayed in any hotel/accommodation in Seoul since I had my own apartment, but my friends recommend these 2 places: Namsan Guesthouse in Myeongdong and Loft 8 in Hongdae. You can try to google to find more information about those 2 places. Myeongdong and Hongdae are great areas to stay during traveling in Seoul because it's near many famous tourist places.

  32. Hi Rika! I am really happy that you are so eager to share this information and answer all of our questions. Me and my friends plan to go to Nami next month. I would just like to ask how much did you pay for the ferry? Can we go to the Garden of Morning Calm, Nami, and Petite France in one day? And how much can we spend in one day if we go to all three places?

    1. Hi! The ferry cost 10000 won including admission fee. Yes you can go to those 3 places in one day if you starf the day early :)

  34. Hi Rika, nice itinerary! This is almost the same to what I am planning. The only diffirence is Seoul-Petite France-KTOPLand(1Hr)-Nami Island. May I ask how long did you stay in Petite France? And if possible, could you please give some comment to our plan.

    Thanks,
    Alex

    1. Hi Alex. I've never heard about KTOPLand. Is that a new place? What kind of place is that? ^^
Petite France is not too big, you can finish it all in about 1 hour, so you can spend more time in Nami Island.
